Colt Lightning 1877
William H. "Billy the Kid" Bonney (Emilio Estevez) starts carrying a Colt Lighting 1877 revolver with a 7 1/2" Cavalary barrel towards the start of the film, and uses it along with a Single Action Army in some scenes. After killing Sheriff Brady (Danny Kamin), he takes his 5" Artillery SAA and thus wields two Colt Lightning revolvers by the end of the film. The real Billy the Kid carried a Colt Thunderer 1877 revolver in .41 Long Colt, but this is an uncommon blank round so Uberti replicas of Lightnings in .38 Special were used for simplicity.

Single Action Army
All of the Regulators carry at least one Single Action Army as their sidearm. Billy the Kid (Emilio Estevez) is also seen using one for the start of the film.
Colt New Service
During the opening credits (shot in original 19th century style film), one of the Regualtors is seen firing two Colt New Service revolvers, even though these are highly anachronistic to the era.

Winchester 1873
Several characters in the film are seen using Winchester 1873 saddle ring carbines. Of the Regulators who use the gun, "Dick" Brewer (Charlie Sheen), Billy the Kid (Emilio Estevez), and "Charley" Bowdrey (Casey Siemaszko) are of notable mention.
Winchester 1866 "Yellow Boy"
Winchester 1866 "Yellow Boy" rifles are also common in the film. Billy the Kid (Emilio Estevez) and "Jose" Chavez y Chavez (Lou Diamond Phillips) are notabley seen using them.

AKM
* AKM rifles are used by Soviet and Cuban soldiers, and later captured by the Wolverines.

* According to Long Mountain Outfitters (http://www.longmountain.com/movieguns/RedDawn), the AKMs used in the movie were actually Egyptian Maadi MISR (imported into the US as the ARM) semi-auto rifles, some of the first semi-automatic Kalashnikov-type rifles ever imported into the United States (besides the Clayco AKM copies). 53 such rifles were used in the movie, 32 of which were converted to full-auto by Class 2 manufacturer Pearl Manufacturing specially for the film. These guns were later used in numerous other movies. Not to be confused with the post 1989 imported firearms called "MISR" which was modified to comply with the federal import ban.

Fake AKS-74
* Fake AKS-74s are used by Soviet Paratroopers in the first attack on the school and Soviet Spetsnaz in the battle in the snow. They are actually Maadi ARM (AKMs) that were very cleverly mocked up with skeletal stocks and a custom make muzzle brake that resembled the AK74.
[[Image:RedDawnAK74 03A.jpg‎|thumb|none|700px|Several angles of

the mocked up AK-74 with the custom Muzzle Brake and the non-folding Skeletal stock. These rifles also use orange bakelite 7.62x39mm magazines. As a contrast, the standard AKMs in the film used metal magazines]]

Fake RPG-7
*Used by Soviet and Communist Bloc soldiers, and later Charlie Sheen. The weapon itself is a fabricated prop, utilizing a vintage 1950s era RPG-2 as a base. A flared rear blast cone and a second 'fake' pistol grip was added as well as a fake optical sight that was fabricated out of plastic (it's a bit too large and wrongly shaped for any of the real RPG optical sights). The rocket warhead is a plastic and rubber fabrication and not an RPG-2 rocket head. The fuse tip itself is the cap from a Crest toothpaste tube!

On another note, the rocket of the fake RPG-7 (like many other films that use rocket launchers) is a foam rubber fake when firing around actors. Prior to the advent of CGI in films, they were fired with real Estes rocket motors and guided along wires to their targets. Below we see a frame of film where we can clearly see the wire that will guide the foam rubber rocket head to its intended target.

Valmet M78
*The Valmet M78 LMG was standing in for the Soviet RPK since none were available in the country when this movie was filmed. The M78 LMG was used by Russian Paratroopers in the beginning of the movie and, and later by the Wolverines, most notably by Jennifer Grey.
[[Image:Valmet_M78_LMG.jpg|thumb|none|400px|Finnish Valmet M78, standing in for a Russian RPK (since they didn't have any available when this film was made) with a standard stock and 30 rd magazine.

Fake DShK heavy machine gun
* At the time of filming there were no DShK 12.7 machine guns available for use in movies, so the armorers mocked up DShKs from ... M60 machine guns! Apparently the size difference between a 7.62mm gun and a .50 cal gun wasn't enough to distract people during the movie.... :)

Fake Gorunov SGM Machine gun
* Yet another Soviet era machine gun that was mocked up from the venerable (and available) M60 Machine gun.

‎
Jatimatic SMG
* The Jatimatic was used by Colonel Strelnikov (William Smith) when he is hunting Charlie Sheen and Patrick Swayze at the end of the film. It was supposed to represent the Polish manufactured PM-63 machine pistol as none were available in the country during the time of filming as this was the Cold War.

FN FAL
* Seen held by Cuban and Nicaraguan soldiers.

Colt SAA
* The Colt Single Action Army revolver was used by Jed (Patrick Swayze).

This revolver was a piece owned by director John Milius.

Marlin Model 336C
* The Marlin Model 336C lever action rifle was picked up from the store just after the invasion. Doug Toby who played the character of Aardvark fires a single shot from the back of a pickup truck at Russian troops, after an American UH-1 helicopter attacks the Soviets on the ground using rockets. He also uses it in some of the ambushes later in the film.

Remington Model 700
* Jed picks up a Remington Model 700 bolt action rifle from Mr. Morris' store at the beginning of the film. He uses it as a sniper rifle during some of the ambushes. Though the Model 700 is chambered in a variety of calibers such as .308 and 30.06 when hunting large game, Jed's rifle appears to be chambered in a smaller caliber, such as .222 Remington, .223 Remington (5.56mm NATO), or .243 Winchester due to the slender barrel and small aperture. He also appears to have mounted a .22 rimfire scope on the rifle.

Remington 870
*One of the weapons grabbed by the boys from Mr. Morris' store at the beginning of the movie. Originally used in its' full sized version and then seen with the barrel cut down to just above the magazine tube after the first ambush of the Russian soldiers near the monument. Used pretty much exclusively by C. Thomas Howell's character Robert throughout the movie.

Fake SA-7 Grail aka Strela-2
* A mocked up SA-7 Grail (built from metal tubing and plastic) is used by a Cuban soldier at an attacking American UH-1D Helicopter. The Mockup of the SA7 is great. The fact that a soldier firing a heat seeking surface to air missile can't hit a slow moving Huey isn't so great... ;)

M1911 Pistol
* An M1911A1 pistol is first seen in the cold dead hands of an American who resisted the Soviet invasion. The pistol is pulled from the hand of the man and inspected by a Soviet Paratrooper who stuffs it behind his webbing belt. The M1911 is also the duty pistol of Colonel Tanner (Powers Boothe).

Trivia Section
* The "Mil-24 Hind"s are excellent mockups of Hind Model-As (painted with winter camo) built up from French Aerospatiale Puma and were later used again in other movies such as Rambo 2 and 3. Three Pumas were modified (and seen on film) and all three had a fake Hind-A 'nose' sections built with darked tinted windows that slipped over the front end of the real Puma helicopter. (If you looked closely, you could see the real nose of the Puma 'underneath' the Hind Nose section through the tinted windows. This limited pilot vision and also restricted motion - quick turns were not possible lest the fake nose front end be ripped off the helicopter. Later incarnations of the same modified Puma helicopter removed the extended Hind Model A Nose sections but kept the fake wings and rockets pods (as these were study modifications and didn't adversely affect the aerodynamics of the Helicopter.)

A Marine at the funeral during the opening credits can be seen briefly holding an M14 rifle.

Beretta 92FS
The Recon Marines carry Beretta 92FS (military designation, M9) pistols as their sidearms. Beretta M9s are the standard side arm for all the Navy SEALs including Stanley Goodspeed (Nicolas Cage), all with tactical flashlight attachments. Goodspeed points his at John Mason (Sean Connery), who swipes it out of his hand, but later gives it back to Goodspeed to defend himself with, and he uses it notably in the underground tunnels to kill one Marine, with little hesitation, as Mason notes.

Beretta 92FS Inox
Major Baxter (David Morse) uses a Beretta 92FS Inox as his sidearm. He draws it on Hummel before turning the gun on Darrow and firing at him before being gunned down by the other Marines.

Beretta 92SB
One of the Marines is seen using an older Beretta 92SB (which has a rounded trigger guard, rather than squared, like on the 92FS/M9) with wood grips during the scene in which Hummel and his men use a hostage to draw Goodspeed and Mason out of hiding.

Beretta 92FS Centurion Inox
During the hotel scene Goodspeed is given a Beretta 92FS Centurion Inox by another FBI agent after he arrives in San Francisco and tells Womack (John Spencer) that he forgot his FBI-issue sidearm. Strangely, all of the other FBI agents in the movie also seem to be carrying 92 Centurions with Inox finishes, even though this pistol has never been issued to the FBI in real life (at the time the movie was made, the FBI would have been using SIG-Sauer and Smith & Wesson pistols).

Smith & Wesson 4506
While waiting for Hummel to fire one of his VX gas missiles, a Marine is seen with his Smith & Wesson 4506, spinning it on a rotating table.

M16A2
Marines at the funeral use real M16A2 rifles for the 21 gun salute.

M16A1 (w/ M16A2 handguards)
Many of the Marines under General Hummel's (Ed Harris) command are armed with M16A1 assault rifles fitted with M16A2 handguards. They are easily noticed as A1 models by the lack of a brass deflector and elevation-adjustable rear sight, older forward assists, and fully-automatic firing modes. Most of them have tactical flashlights installed on the barrels.

(Fake) Colt XM177
Colt XM177 Commando look-a-like rifles seen being used by many of the Marines. Mason and Goodspeed take two for themselves later in the film. The XM177s in the film all have 10" barrels and bulky older-style flash suppressors, but also have various receiver styles. Some have A1 receivers, others have A2 receivers, and others have the forward assist and brass deflector but not the A2-style rear sight. What this means is that none of them are factory XM177 variants. Like most of the "XM177s" seen in Hollywood, the upper receivers of the guns in this movie are most likely taken from civilian AR-15 carbine variants that have had their barrels chopped and fake XM177-style flash hiders welded on. The lower receivers (all of which seem to lack "fencing" of more modern M16 variants) may either be from genuine XM177s, or they may again be civilian AR15 Sporter-1 lowers converted to auto. Yet another example of movie "Franken-guns" built from the parts of many weapons.

A notable goof is that the receivers of the guns held by individual characters change throughout the film. For instance, the XM177 handed to Goodspeed by Mason clearly has an A2 receiver when he first gets it, but later, it has an A1 receiver. Captain Frye's (Gregory Sporleder's) XM177 also undergoes various receiver changes - in the shower room scene, it has an A2-style receiver, while in later scenes it has a forward assist and brass deflector but no A2-style rear sight, and still later it has just the forward assist (A1-style receiver).

[[Image:CAR-15Rifle.jpg|thumb|none|400px|Commercial CAR-15 semiautomatic rifle - 5.56mm. This is strictly a semiautomatic civilian copy of the XM177 style of rifles.

Cobray CM203 37mm Flare Launcher
Many of the Marines have M16 variant rifles fitted Cobray CM203 37mm Flare Launchers underslung, standing in for M203 grenade launchers, which are considered destructive devices and are more expensive to buy.

M203 Grenade Launcher
While CM203 flare launchers dominate the film, Cpt. Darrow's rifle is fitted with a real M203 grenade launcher, likely because he is a main character. Throughout the film, the rifle this launcher is fitted to changes from a slab-side M16 (SP1), to an M16A1, and at one point, even a Colt CAR-15 Commando, although it is fitted with a CM203 launcher instead.

MAC-10
Hummel can be seen holding a MAC-10 in a Vietnam service picture. This image is actually taken from one of Ed Harris' earlier film roles, the Charles Bronson vehicle Borderline.
Colt M1911A1
The main villain of the film, General Frank Hummel (Ed Harris) carries a stainless Colt M1911A1 as his sidearm of choice throughout the film. It is seen being pulled out by Hummel, who then shoots Sergeant Crisp during the confrontation.
Beretta M93R (as the "Auto 9")
RoboCop's (Peter Weller)'s standard sidearm throughout the whole movie is the "Auto 9". This is a Beretta M93R machine pistol which was heavily modified for the film, featuring a longer barrel with an enormous compensator/flash hider shaped like a casket, plastic grips, and a taller rear sight. Typically, Robocop fires this weapon on its 3-round burst setting.

In addition to its appearances in the other Robocop films and TV series, the Auto 9 has also appeared in several other movies, including Sin City and City Hunter.
Barrett M82A1 (as the "Cobra Assault Cannon")
When Clarence Boddicker (Kurtwood Smith) and his gang are asked by Dick Jones (Ronnie Cox) to kill RoboCop, they are provided with an experimental military weapon being developed by OCP called the Cobra Assault Cannon. The Cobras are actually older-specification Barrett M82 long-range .50 BMG rifles which have been dressed up extra plastic housing over the receivers and fitted with gigantic scopes (according to IMDB, the scopes were originally supposed to show computer-generated targeting information, but this idea was scrapped due to budget constraints). The Cobra fires some type of powerful high explosive incendary round that explodes upon impact; in the film, Clarence Boddicker memorably tests the weapon by firing it at a 6000 SUX sedan, destroying the vehicle.

Anne Lewis (Nancy Allen) obtains one of these rifles and uses it to kill one of Boddicker's men during the shootout at the disused chemical weapons plant. After RoboCop and Lewis take out Boddicker and his gang, RoboCop takes one of the Cobra Assault Cannons (presumably, the same one used by Lewis) to the OCP office building and uses it to destroy the ED-209 cyborg out in front.

Murphy's (Peter Weller's) sidearm before he becomes Robocop is a SIG-Sauer P226 9mm, which is later used by his partner Anne Lewis (Nancy Allen).

(There has been some debate on RoboCop message boards over whether this gun is a P220 or a P226. It is definitely a P226 because the frame of the gun has the prominent bulges along the side, visible between the takedown switch and the decocker, which make the frame wider so that the gun can accomodate a double-stack magazine. The P220, which takes a single-stack magazine, lacks these; the sides of the receiver appear smooth rather than bulged, even from a distance.)
The Heckler & Koch P9S is the standard sidearm of the Detroit Police Department in the movie; Murphy uses one briefly during the highway shootout with Clarence Boddicker's men that he borrows from his partner Anne Lewis. Later in the range, we see many policemen practicing with their P9s, indicating clearly that this weapon is their standard-issue.
Clarence Boddicker (Kurtwood Smith) uses a short-barreled semi-automatic shotgun with vented barrels to blow Murphy's limbs off during his death scene. This is a modified Remington 1100. The conversion involves moving the action spring from behind the action to around the magazine tube behind the gas piston. This allows the the shotgun to be fitted with a pistol grip, and a telescoping stock. This shotgun was also used in Jake Speed, and The Highway Man.
It was imported for commercial sale into the U.S. during the 1980s and banned from import after 1989. The weapon used by Axel Foley (Eddie Murphy) in this movie is a Browning Hi-Power pistol. In the second screen cap, note the external extractor. Similar guns can be seen in other movies, like Extreme Prejudice and The Hitcher (1986)

Smith and Wesson Model 639
We can see several times one of these 2nd generation S&W pistols, with adjustable sights (probably, the same gun was used in all the scenes).

Dan Wesson revolver
One of the Beverly Hills PD officers uses a 4" barreled revolver with enclosed ejector rod and ventilated rib. At first sight it looks like a Colt Trooper, but looking closely, it can be identified as a Dan Wesson revolver.

Unidentified firearms
We can see several handguns that are hard to identify precisely:

In the opening scenes, we can see several revolvers with fixed and adjustable sights, used by the Detroit PD officers. They are probably S&W model 10 & 19

Another officer in this scene uses an auto pistol (S&W?)

Gilber R. Hill, in his role of Inspector Todd, carries an auto pistol inside the waistband. It doesn't seem to be the S&W 639 seen in other scenes (I think that this pistol has fixed sights)

Sawed-off Shotgun
Red (Danny R. McBride), retrieves a sawed-off shotgun from the weapon cache hidden in his wall when he and Dale Denton (Seth Rogen) prepare to to break Saul (James Franco) out of the Ted Jones'(Gary Cole) grow house. Although he chickens out later and flees the scene before they enter, he returnes at the climax of the film. After using his car to run over and kill Jones' henchman Matheson (Craig Robinson), he proceeds to fire the shotgun at the dead man's foot, blowing part of it off.

NOTE: Upon closer inspection, Red's shotgun seems to be based on a variety of actual counterparts. First, it's pump resembles that of a Winchester 1300. The body, from the barrel and magazine cap to the ejection port resembles either a Winchester 1300, or a Mossberg 500. The trigger guard however, looks like a Remington 870's. The safety seems to located in front of the trigger guard, and not above it, like a Mossberg 500 series, or behind it, like a Remington 870. The gun may be a fictional mock up of one, or just a custom built model. If anyone can correctly identify this gun please do because I'm an amatuer and I could be wrong.

:I say it is a Mossberg 500. The action clearly has the action bars the 1300 doesn't have (and has some nice look engine grooves) and the pump and trigger guard are Mossberg as well (trigger guard is at an ackward angle). I can't see the end of the mag tube so I can't see for sure. I say we delete all these BOOTLEG shots and wait until the legal DVD comes out and the gun is more clearly seen. - Gunmaster45
