More widely known to American viewers under the U.S. release title of '''"The Beast"'''. The film was shot in Israel, using the Middle Eastern landscape, and more importantly, Israeli armorers. The very real Ti-67 tanks (Israeli-modified T55 tanks featuring a larger 105mm gun vs. the original 100mm gun) used as well as the authentic Soviet weaponry were all provided by Israel, with cooperation from the IDF. The T55 tanks were well obsolete by the time frame of this film, however it was nice to see authentic Soviet armor in a Western movie. When the film was made in 1987 (released in 1988), the Russo-Afghan war was still ongoing, and thus a topic of debate, but the quaint perception of the mountain tribes of Afghanistan as 'victims of Soviet oppression' is now out of date. Views of Afghanistan, its peoples and the outer tribal areas have changed in recent years with the current U.S. involvement in the country and the radicalization of the mountain regions towards militant Islam. An attempt to paint the Russian invasion (1980-1988) as a mirror of the American action in Vietnam (1965-1973) seems awkward and glosses over the very real differences.

== AK-47 ==

The [[AK-47]] is one of the more common weapons in the film, used by both the Soviets and the Afghan Mujahideen alike. The Soviets use mostly [[AK-47#AKS-47|AKS-47]] folding stock rifles, while the Afghans have both folding and fixed stock models.

Note the extended muzzle nut on these AK-47s. They are the BFAs (Blank Firing Adapters) used mostly by Israeli movie armorers. American movie armorers use blank firing adapters that are either hidden in the barrel or look just like the existing compensators or flash hiders on the issued firearms. Usually these '''obvious''' BFAs indicate that a film was shot in Israel.

== RPG-7 ==

The [[RPG-7]] plays a pivotal role in the film, first being used by Soviet soldiers during the raid on the village (including being used to blow up a mosque by Koverchenko at the beginning of the film) then is captured by the Mujahideen who intend to use it to take revenge ("badal") on a Soviet tank that is lost in the Afghan desert after the murderous raid. The Afghans initially have poor luck using the weapon, even damaging it to the point it won't fire, though a defector from the tank's crew, Konstantin Koverchenko ([[Jason Patric]]), is able to repair it using parts from a Lee-Enfield rifle sight spring, and is given the responsibility of firing the weapon at the tank, though ends up only blowing off the end of the tank's main gun barrel.

== Short Magazine Lee-Enfield ==

A [[Short Magazine Lee-Enfield (SMLE)|Short Magazine Lee-Enfield No. 1 Mk III*]] bolt-action rifle is among the collection of weapons used by the Afghan Mujahideen in the film. A Lee-Enfield is seen in the hands of Taj ([[Steven Bauer]]), the leader of the small Afghan Mujahideen group and it was his main weapon in the film. Taj is also seen holding his Lee-Enfield rifle when he swears ''badal'' (revenge) to Allah when he was standing at the crushed remains of his brother. The weapon's main role in the film is being cannibalized for parts by Koverchenko to repair the damaged RPG-7 launcher. Another Lee-Enfield can be seen being cleaned by one of the villagers just prior to the raid by the Soviets at the beginning of the film.

During the raid on the village, one of the inhabitants mans a [[B-10 recoilless rifle]] mounted on a hill overlooking the village and attempts to engage the attacking tanks, nearly scoring a hit on one before the emplacement is destroyed when the tank returns fire, the gunner diving clear just in time to save himself.

The Afghans are shown using traditional '''Afghan Jezzail muskets''', dating back to the 18th century. These are traditional ornate and customized muskets with tribal decorations (and pretty much useless for accurate long range fire at modern distances or most instances of Close Quarters Battle). During the raid on the village, one of the inhabitants catches Koverchenko off-guard with an Islamic percussion ''Jezzail'' musket and pulls the trigger point-blank, though the gun is unloaded, producing only a harmless click as the Afghan smirks and says something to him in ''Pashto'' before one of Koverchenko's comrades knocks him down and beats him with the butt of his AKS-47. Koverchenko can later be seen holding it at the end of the film when he's airlifted out by a Soviet helicopter, having had it given to him by Taj.

== SGMT Machine Gun ==

One of the weapons on the Soviet tanks is the [[Goryunov SG-43 Machine Gun#SGMT machine gun|SGMT machine gun]], the vehicle-mounted version of the SG-43 Goryunov machine gun. The weapon is mounted in a "coaxial" configuration parallel to the main gun, and is most notably seen being fired in the scene where the tank is trying to make it through a mountain pass to safety while being pursued by Koverchenko and the Mujahideen, as well as in the scene where all the tanks' weapons are fired at once when the crew believes themselves to be surrounded by the Mujahideen at night.

One is mounted on the commander's hatch of the Soviet T55 tanks, and is used by the tyrannical Commander Daskal ([[George Dzundza]]) to impose his authority over his crew, as well as murder Afghan crewmember Samad ([[Erick Avari]]) when he is suspected of being a traitor. Daskal attempts to use it to fend off the Mujahideen when they are advancing on the tank while it's stranded due to an overheated engine, but runs out of ammo after firing only a few rounds, none of which hit their mark. ==F-1 Hand Grenade==

The [[F-1 hand grenade]] is the Soviet World War II fragmentation grenade that was still in use until the late 1980s. However the newer RGD-5 grenade would have been the most commonly issued grenade to Soviet Forces. This ordnance may have been captured from the Communist Puppet Regime of Afghanistan (who was supplied by the Soviets and may have received older ordnance). In the film, during a night ambush, the Mujahideen shower the tank with F-1's from a cliff above, wounding one of the crew before they're able to retreat to the safety of the tank and escape. A group of Afghan women also use F-1 grenades (attached to Plastic Explosives) to trigger a rock slide that disables the tank.

== RGD-5 Hand Grenade ==

[[RGD-5 hand grenade]]s make several appearances in the film, typically used by the Soviets to booby trap objects (including Koverchenko when he defies Daskal) for the persuing Afghans. Finally, a deranged Daskal intends to use RGD-5's to commit suicide rather than face capture by the Afghans, but is stopped by the remaining crew as the act would take their lives as well.

::Actually it is not surprising that he is unharmed. The rock was a perfect shield. He was elevated away from the ground by at least three feet or more, shielded by solid rock. The only part of him that would have been exposed to the blast would be the soles of his boots, and the grenade would have blown outward, away from him (several feet below him amongst the attacking dogs).

When the helicopter happens upon the tank crew, Daskal uses a flare pistol of unknown make and model to signal the chopper.

The Afghans have has a long history of village gunsmithing, especially since the British invasion of 1838. This was a time when smoothbore flintlocks were actually more common than rifled muskets and the percussion cap firearm was a relatively new invention. The Short Magazine Lee Enfields in the country are obvious left overs from both World Wars, but the film takes place in 1981, in the third year of the Soviet invasion. Mustafa's band of scavengers are the best armed fighters in the area, because they steal all their weapons from fallen Soviet soldiers. In 1981 most of the Afghan tribesmen would have a mix of antique weapons and ''some'' capture Soviet weaponry. Things have changed a lot since then. The 1980s saw a huge influx of aid and help by western powers (like the U.S.) and other countries that (at the time) were at odds with the USSR, like Mainland China. After 2001, countries like Iran and Syria funneled tons of weapons to any Anti-U.S. proxy force (like Al Qaeda and the Taliban). The Afghan tribesmen of today's conflicts is no longer the ''quaintly armed with 'vintage rifles' villagers'' of past years. They are much more heavily armed with modern weapons, mostly supplied by Iran via the Taliban through Pakistan. Too many viewers have this antiquated view of Afghanistan.

==Colt Commando==
In several scenes some of the SEALs are seen carrying [[M16 rifle series#Colt XM177/CAR-15/Commando Series Colt Commando|XM177E2 and XM177]] rifles, notabley during a training excercise and during the mission where Graham ([[Dennis Haysbert]]) is killed. Some of them are seen fitted with [[M203 grenade launcher]]s. This movie is one of the very few films where we see an actual XM177 or GAU-5/A rifle (or a very close copy, being that the sound suppressor/flashhiders of the original XM177 were not good for blank firing guns, so many times an existing M16 rifle was custom modified to resemble the XM177. In the 1980s there were a slew of various aftermarket XM177 style flash hiders - some were very accurate, some were not.) At any rate, this is one of the most accurate portrayals of an XM177 in modern U.S. Cinema. The weapon is prominantly displayed on the movie poster in the hands of Lt. Dale Hawkins ([[Charlie Sheen]]), fitted with an M203, although he never uses one in the film.

==AK-47==
Ben Shaheed's ([[Nicholas Kadi]]) militia use what look to be original [[AK-47]]s in the film. Many of them appear to be milled receiver AKs with Russian front sights and double tang back ends with the typical 'drop down' angled buttstock (with unique Type II Pattern stock mounting bracket) and the swivel sling on the body, not the stock. They could have been Poly-Technology Legend series of AKs that were imported during the 1980s (this movie was shot in 1989 and released in 1990). It is also possible that like in more current movies such as ''[[We Were Soldiers]]'', the armorers could have used Milled receiver bodies and assembled AKs from Russian Parts kits. Since the sequence that was supposed to be Beirut was shot in Spain, the production could have used weapons provided by European Armorers (who at the time had no restrictions on acquiring Soviet/Russian guns).

The underfolding AKS-47s in the movie are milled receiver Russian type guns, one of the few times we actually see real AK-47s (or really close copies) in a U.S. made film. In the 1980s, there were two Chinese imported versions of the RPK (none of which looked very good).

One of the pre-1989 ban guns was the NMD-83 - it had a 21" barrel, a standard AK stock and a muzzle brake (none of which was accurate for the RPK). They also imported a second RPK clone (whose name escape me) that had a Chinese style club foot stock but placed the bipod BEFORE (!!) the front sight, not after it, affixed to a long muzzle brake. This also looked atrocious and not many were sold. Not sure about the exact names of the Chinese RPK clones, since they didn't sell very well (hopefully someone who actually has a pre-1989 gun can let us know the exact name).

In the film, Leary ([[Rick Rossovich]]) carries what is supposed to be an RPK light machine gun. It appears to be a modified NMD-83 rifle converted to full auto fire. The barrel was lengthened from 21" to 23.25" which is more correct and the muzzle brake was removed. The short bipod was removed and a longer (though tubular, not rectangular) Chinese Bipod was attached (see pic). The Chinese Style front sight with the enclosed top hood was still used. Errors in the gun's modification are (a) the barrel is not an RPK heavy barrel but a long standard AK barrel, (b) The front foregrip is still a standard AK, in fact it's a Chinese Type 56 style, with the slot for the pig sticker bayonet, which is wrong, (c) the buttstock is the Chinese style clubfoot stock, not the thicker, more angular Russian RPK stock and (d) the receiver appears to be a standard Type 56 stamped receiver without the reinforcing bar of the RPK.

Lt. Vincent Hanna ([[Al Pacino]]) pulls out an [[FN FNC|FN FNC-80]] assault rifle outside the bank heist on Flower Street. Michael Cheritto ([[Tom Sizemore]]) receives a 5.56mm present between the eyes from Hanna's [[FN FNC|FN FNC-80]]. According to the on set armorer, Hanna's rifle was a Select Fire FNC-80 assault rifle that was chopped down by the armorer to a Para length barrel and an M16 style birdcage was attached. The FNC-80 was imported into the U.S. as a full auto weapon and as a Semiautomatic Sporter rifle named the FNC 223 Sporter. Despite being a full auto weapon, the director Michael Mann instructed Al Pacino to fire only Semi auto, being that the LAPD lieutenant would be concerned for stray rounds hitting bystanders.

Several [[M16 rifle series#M16A1 Rifle|M16A1]] assault rifles feature prominently in the film, fitted with [[M16 rifle series#M16A2 Rifle|M16A2]]-style handguards. They are wielded by various L.A.P.D. officers, including Detective Casals ([[Wes Studi]]). Casals uses one to assist in disabling McCauley's getaway vehicle (a Lincoln Town Car) and injure Chris Shiherlis ([[Val Kilmer]]) during the gun battle resulting from the bank heist. According to the on set armorer, the director wanted the actors to fire semi-auto only. The reason given was that the police would be less interested in 'suppressing fire' and more interested in controlled shots given the proximity of so many innocent bystanders.

Based on configuration it may be a 654 upper on a GAU-5A receiver (or possibly even an SP1 receiver with a drop-in autosear to allow it fire fully-automatic).

==Colt Model 733==
During the armored car robbery, Chris Shiherlis ([[Val Kilmer]]) uses a Colt Model 733 carbine as his weapon of choice. During the bank robbery both Neil McCauley ([[Robert De Niro]]) and Chris Shiherlis ([[Val Kilmer]]) carry short barreled [[M16 rifle series|Colt M733]] carbines. They are ultra-compact versions of the M16 rifle family with 11.5-inch barrels, being smaller and shorter than the M16A2 Rifle (20-inch) and M4 Carbine (14.5-inch). The lighter encumbrance comes at a trade off of reduced range and accuracy, which is appropriate since the Model 733 can be fired from inside the vehicle, the robbers burdened by loads of cash, and because the firefight takes place at close to medium distances. The M733s have full automatic and semi-auto fire modes, while retaining the penetration of the 5.56mm round of its big brothers, which is particularly deadly as they are capable of wounding officers and bystanders even through objects normally considered safe cover. They handle similarly to submachine guns, however they are more accurate and much more powerful. However, due to the weapon's compact and short barrel, 5.56 NATO rounds fired from this weapon lose a significant amount of velocity found in longer barreled weapons. With slower velocities, rounds from from this weapon do not "fragment", a secondary wounding mechanism, but still provide greater punch that typical submachine gun rounds. This is a very professional choice of a primary weapon for that particular job, time and environment.

Not surprisingly, Shiherlis uses the M733s to great effect, killing Bosko ([[Ted Levine]]), a member of Hanna's detectives, in a brief exchange of fire. After the getaway ride is disabled, Shiherlis sprays the police barricade with dozens of rounds, shooting up the LAPD patrol cars and bringing down several officers. McCauley also uses it to shoot a pursuing patrolman while carjacking a Ford Taurus Wagon to escape.

Lt. Vincent Hanna ([[Al Pacino]]) pulls out an [[FN FNC|FN FNC-80]] assault rifle outside the bank heist on Flower Street. Michael Cheritto ([[Tom Sizemore]]) receives a 5.56mm present between the eyes from Hanna's [[FN FNC|FN FNC-80]]. According to the on set armorer, Hanna's rifle was a Select Fire FNC-80 assault rifle that was chopped down by the armorer to a Para length barrel and an M16 style birdcage was attached. The FNC-80 was imported into the U.S. as a full auto weapon and as a Semiautomatic Sporter rifle named the FNC 223 Sporter. Despite being a full auto weapon, the director Michael Mann instructed Al Pacino to fire only Semi auto, being that the LAPD lieutenant would be concerned for stray rounds hitting bystanders.

Several [[M16 rifle series#M16A1 Rifle|M16A1]] assault rifles feature prominently in the film, fitted with [[M16 rifle series#M16A2 Rifle|M16A2]]-style handguards. They are wielded by various L.A.P.D. officers, including Detective Casals ([[Wes Studi]]). Casals uses one to assist in disabling McCauley's getaway vehicle (a Lincoln Town Car) and injure Chris Shiherlis ([[Val Kilmer]]) during the gun battle resulting from the bank heist. According to the on set armorer, the director wanted the actors to fire semi-auto only. The reason given was that the police would be less interested in 'suppressing fire' and more interested in controlled shots given the proximity of so many innocent bystanders.

==Colt Model 733==
During the armored car robbery, Chris Shiherlis ([[Val Kilmer]]) uses a Colt Model 733 carbine as his weapon of choice. During the bank robbery both Neil McCauley ([[Robert De Niro]]) and Chris Shiherlis ([[Val Kilmer]]) carry short barreled [[M16 rifle series|Colt M733]] carbines. They are ultra-compact versions of the M16 rifle family with 11.5-inch barrels, being smaller and shorter than the M16A2 Rifle (20-inch) and M4 Carbine (14.5-inch). The lighter encumbrance comes at a trade off of reduced range and accuracy, which is appropriate since the Model 733 can be fired from inside the vehicle, the robbers burdened by loads of cash, and because the firefight takes place at close to medium distances. The M733s have full automatic and semi-auto fire modes, while retaining the penetration of the 5.56mm round of its big brothers, which is particularly deadly as they are capable of wounding officers and bystanders even through objects normally considered safe cover. They handle similarly to submachine guns, however they are more accurate and much more powerful. However, due to the weapon's compact and short barrel, 5.56 NATO rounds fired from this weapon lose a significant amount of velocity found in longer barreled weapons. With slower velocities, rounds from from this weapon do not "fragment", a secondary wounding mechanism, but still provide greater punch that typical submachine gun rounds. This is a very professional choice of a primary weapon for that particular job, time and environment.

Not surprisingly, Shiherlis uses the M733s to great effect, killing Bosko ([[Ted Levine]]), a member of Hanna's detectives, in a brief exchange of fire. After the getaway ride is disabled, Shiherlis sprays the police barricade with dozens of rounds, shooting up the LAPD patrol cars and bringing down several officers. McCauley also uses it to shoot a pursuing patrolman while carjacking a Ford Taurus Wagon to escape.

[[1968 Tunnel Rats]] is the latest film directed by 'infamous director' Uwe Boll. The film was originally titled '''Tunnel Rats'''. The film was screened at film festivals in Canada and Germany and had a limited theatrical run in Los Angeles at the Downtown Independent Theatre on December 20th, 2008. The 'official' release date for the film in the U.S. was supposed to be March 13th, 2009, however that release date got pushed back, despite being released elsewhere in the world on DVD. Now the U.S. DVD will be available for wide release on Jun 30, 2009.

Like usual, there is a lot to criticize in the film, though the film itself has mixed reviews (some reviewers actually think Boll is getting better(!)) But there was not a lot of thought put into the costuming and gear for the film. The Soldiers wear modern BDUs in O.D., their shoulder patches are bright and not subdued (subdued insignia was common by 1968) and the helmet covers are Woodland BDU, not the Nam leaf pattern which is correct for Vietnam.
