:It depends really. For the most part, the spent casings essentially act as a sabot for the subsequent round in the tube. When the next round is set off, the casing is sent forward with the projectile and falls away when clear of the barrel. In a way, they operate very much like Roman candles, except there's not delay charge needing to be burned before igniting lift charges. However, there was some descriptions that made it sound like rocket ball ammunition, like in the Volcanic firearms. --Blitzen (talk) 04:12, 25 April 2016 (EDT)

Which movie was this? It was NOT the first one (A new hope) (1977) because I've handled those original Prop guns and they were just cheap metal tubes and NOT built on a Sterling SMG. The Stormtrooper ones yes, but the Rebels on the blockade runner had very simple crappy prop pistols made out of machined aluminum. == Star Wars: Dark Forces II ==

Unlike the majority of games, Dark Forces II had Live Action cutscenes, I believe the only Star Wars game to have them (Not counting Stock Footage used in the Battlefront games or others that ust used Stock film footage). Three firearms appear, whether mocked up or not, I dunno. The cutscenes were never of high visual quality, so they may be a bit blurry. I figured all Star Wars, including games, go here.

First up is a familiar weapon: The DH-17 Blaster Pistol that appears in the game's second cutscene. It is only seen in this scene and is never seen again in cutscenes or even in-game.

The second weapon also comes from the second cutscene. It's carried by the three-eyed Gran thug. Meant to stand in for the E-11 apparently, as the Gran switches to one when gameplay begins, and this gun is never seen again.

And finally, Katarn's famous Bryar Blaster Pistol. It appears in several cutscenes throughout the game, and seems to be closely modeled after what appeared in the first Dark Forces. Interestingly, the in-game model differs substantially, as well as the models for it in Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy.

[[Image:DarkForces Bryar 1.jpg|thumb|none|500px|After the previous cutscene, Kyle ditches his DH-17 for his normal Bryar (Trivia: For the novel Rebel Agent, based on the game, most of the art does depict Katarn using his Bryar. However, in the original paintings he is actually armed with a DH-17 and the Bryar must've been digitally added later. A guess is that the artist saw the cutscene with Kyle stealing the DH-17 and assumed that it became his primary weapon). The third cutscene is the first time he draws it. He fires it several times, faking recoil. He blows a droid's arm off with it, but the rest of the droid escapes.]]
Blanks
It seems odd that Lucas would bother having the guns in A New Hope actually fire blanks if he's just going to rotoscope in a beam in post. Not only would he be able to save money on having an armorer on set and safety considerations, he could've avoided dealing with flying brass and smoke. Although having the actors react to recoil was a nice touch, it's a stark contrast to how he filmed with prequels, with minimal sets and everything on greenscreen. --Funkychinaman (talk) 19:33, 22 April 2014 (EDT)
::::Finally, someone else notices that! I think that only the "grip" can fold out, and the rest of the "folding stock" is actually fused with the body. If that's the case, I wish they would have left the useless part of the stock off and gone with a more practical grip design. But maybe then it wouldn't look enough like the E-11.
:::::::Evil Tim (talk) 21:29, 20 November 2015 (EST)
::::::::A few other things we get from these images. Firstly, we can see the double stack step on Poe's blaster confirming that it is based on a P226. There are also a couple of blasters which are based more on the original Sterling than the stormtrooper rifles which look a lot like the original DH-17 rebel blasters (one of which appears to be battle damaged and has a stock, different sights and a few other slight differences). There is another version of the G36 blaster fitted with a stock, and from stuff I have seen my guess is that these are the standard Resistance blaster rifle. Lastly, I think there is actually an M1911 in one of these guns, just not that one. If you look at the one with the bone handle and long square barrel, the only exposed parts of the base gun are the trigger, trigger guard and magazine release, and the me these look like they are from a 1911 variant with a "3 hole" trigger: --commando552 (talk) 05:35, 21 November 2015 (EST)
Some of the Guavian Death Gang enforcers are wielding pistols and rifles made off a Kalashnikov AK-101/102/105. Most of the changes add a bulkier dust-cover, some cosmetics to obscure the receiver, and the removal of the barrel and gas tube. The foregrips and trunion block rear sight are unmistakable, however.

The sight on top also looks like it is based on the old Singlepoint OEG sights that were on the rebel blasters of the original trilogy, plus it has that shiny barrel which makes me think it might be intended to be a progression of the DH-17. --commando552 (talk) 13:36, 24 July 2015 (EDT)
:Another point about the Gyrojets, I do not think that the "pepperbox" is a genuine Gyrojet. Here is the only picture I can find of this variant, being help by the inventor Robert Mainhardt:As you can see the real variant did have 12 barrels an alothough similar, is definitely different to gun used in the movie. If nothing else, the vast majority of Gyrojet guns were chambered in 13mm or 12mm, and this gun has much smaller barrels. It is possible that it could be 6mm, but I think this was only used for a few dozen experimental assault rifles that were given to the US army so I doubt it is that. Also, it seems to have a needless amount of metal around the barrels with too much space between them. The real version has barrels made from very thin metal and were tightly packed together, which was possible due to the fact that it had an incredibly low chamber pressure. Also, just pointing out that pedantically this isn't a pepperbox pistol, but instead is a volley pistol. The difference is that a pepperbox has barrels which rotate on a centre axis to fire in sequence, as opposed to this which fires all barrels at the same time. --commando552 (talk) 09:31, 8 August 2014 (EDT)
:::My guess is that it is a prop, but there is so little info about the various Gyrojets that I suppose it could be possible that it is a real prototype weapon. To me though, it has the look of a prop gun, looking a bit too simple and sleek, especially considering that these pistols were pure prototypes and were never produced (they were also only ever intended as a specialist military weapon for mowing down a pack of VC in one shot so I doubt they would look this "nice" for lack of a better term). Also, based on how the Gyrojets work, I imagine it is very difficult to actually get one to fire blanks (I have no idea how they manage it with the standard carbines and pistols in other movies, probably just a pyrotechnic in the barrel and no actual round at all), so it might actually be easier to just build a prop from scratch. --commando552 (talk) 10:35, 8 August 2014 (EDT)
The same magazine did a similiar piece on Thunderball showing a variety of interesting dart guns that weren't in the completed film.
My theory is both Irwin Allen and his former partner Cubby Broccoli (and Harry Saltzman) saw the 1966 piece in Life magazine on MBA and the Gyrojet weapons. Interesting how Murderers' Row beat YOLT to the post and also started the film with Matt Helm having a faked death and a trick cigarette. Also interesting how the Bond films of the '70s resembled the Helm films of the '60s (jokey villains, even the golden bullet on the poster of The Man with the Golden Gun resembling the "Matt Helm" bullet in the pre-credits sequence of The Silencers with Jaws meeting his demise in The Spy Who Loved Me in a similar manner to Ironhead in Murderers' Row.Foofbun (talk) 19:09, 8 August 2014 (EDT)
The Russian on the side of the airburst modules seems to be fairly functional. My guess is that it's called the aZMD (or, really аМЗД), based off the Cyrillic on the side of the sight. The module hooked to the magazine released reads "задать ДИСТ" or "Specify remote". I'm not sure what the button nearest the magazine says, but I'm guess it's "рожим" or rozhim, but I really think it's "размах" or range, which would fit if it's for an airburst unit. --Blitzen (talk) 20:57, 12 August 2013 (EDT)

:As a native Cyrillic reader my self I'm more inclined to say that it is вМЗД. It's probably supposed to be an acronym for the name of the top mounted air-burst computer module. Since we're bringing up that, these also popped up on the Elysium auction. They claimed their screen used but I can not recall what scenes they're in.
The second gun looks like CGI, which it probably is, the third just looks like a prop, looks a bit like scar, but the magazine seems a bit far and I see no reason why they would put a gun underneath the shell if the magazine is not there, besides it doesn't shoot bullets so no point in a working gun.
:I don't think it is exactly, but it's definitely based off of it. You get a nice shot of it during the film, the fire control unit looks to be much bulkier than the KAC ChainSAW, so it's likely a custom conversion done by the film armorers. Max (Matt Damon) grabs a Chemrail while fighting in the armory on Elysium. The weapon has a high rate of fire, and its high-velocity rounds rip right through walls and shred enemies. However, the blazing rate of fire forces Max to ditch the weapon for a fresh gun quickly. Judging by the name, firing effects, and the fact it seems to fire semi-normal ammunition, it is probably a combination of normal rifle firing caseless rounds with electromagnetic rails to increase velocity.

The second gun looks like CGI, which it probably is, the third just looks like a prop, looks a bit like scar, but the magazine seems a bit far and I see no reason why they would put a gun underneath the shell if the magazine is not there, besides it doesn't shoot bullets so no point in a working gun.

The last gun in the unknown 1 section looks a bit like a TDI Vector, but I could just be imagining angles. I would assume the Chemrail is a prop built for the movie and doesn't really function, but then again stranger things have happened (the shockingly functional Zorg Pod weapon from the Fifth Element). -Jerkyman45
:I don't think it is exactly, but it's definitely based off of it. You get a nice shot of it during the film, the fire control unit looks to be much bulkier than the KAC ChainSAW, so it's likely a custom conversion done by the film armorers. I do think the weapon is a M249 or Minimi SAW, but would need to see the film or that scene again to make sure. --Blitzen (talk) 22:13, 11 August 2013 (EDT)
:: Yeah, the gun isn't a Minimi variant. Can't figure out what it is though, it's got the M249 belt box.
I had a good going over of this page; I feel that apart from being severely lacking in information and with several errors, using one page for three films and two TV series occupying two parallel continua was somewhat silly. I've studied the guns from the GITS series in depth; I fully intend to make pages for each film and each series in the future, and populate all of them with far more than I've cropped from here. In the meantime I'm using this to store this paragraph.

In the Stand Alone Complex TV series, Togusa carries a fictional Mateba 2006M, which quite closely resembles the real Mateba Unica-6 autorevolver, a semiautomatic revolver with uses the recoil of firing to revolve the cylinder and cock the hammer. The most visible difference from the Unica-6 is a ventilated rib that the 2006M lacks, although the grip is also different.

Sadly I'm 5500 miles from my DVDs presently so I can't really back this up with screenshots as good as I'd like to, but I'll do what I can. YourMessageHere 16:44, 30 March 2009 (UTC)

Mateba 2006M vs. Mateba 6 Unica
Togusa's revolver is modeled after the Mateba 2006M. This is a real gun and it is different from the Mateba 6 Unica Autorevolver. To reload 2006M you swing out the cylinder upwards to the left, just like in the movie. The 6 Unica's cylinder moves downward instead. Also, the top of the Unica's frame is open, which is clearly not the case for Togusa's gun.

Hence Togusa's Mateba/Matever resembles a 2006M and not a 6 Unica.

Youtube video comparing both revolvers: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V0zxgyim_g4

Another rant about Togusa's gun
The article currently states: "Togusa carries yet another fictionalized version of a real gun, the Mateba 2008M, a spinoff of the 2006M variant of the Mateba model 6 Unica." This is incorrect. The 2006M is not a variant of the 6 Unica, they are very different models. In fact the 2006M was built starting from the early 80s while the 6 Unica became available as recently as the late 90s. The biggest difference between those two guns is that the 6 Unica has a slide and is capable of semi-automatic fire while the 2006M can only be fired as single- or double action.

One thing I'm not sure about is the naming. Does anybody have an official source saying that this particular gun from the movie is supposed to be called 2008? I have seen the artbooks for SAC and they call Togusa's gun from SAC a 2008, but that is a different gun. It would be strange if the creators gave the same number to two different guns. Also there is an airsoft replica which calls itself 2007 and claims to be officially licensed: http://www.marushin-kk.co.jp/itemmateba.html
The P90 does not field strip like the M22
According to one of the caps, it shows them field stripping an M22 where it swings open forward like an AR-15. The FN P90 that the M22 is based off of does not open forward and tilt on a hinge. The front of of a P90 just comes apart forward from the rest of the body. Here's a vid of a PS90 (The civi P90) being field stripped. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-IhG1o1bz_I Excalibur01

M22 vs. M23
Motoko Kusanagi calls her weapon M23 (you can hear her pronouncing it as "ni-san", meaning "two-three") and it is translated as M-23 in all english subtitles that I have. Why does the article call this weapon M22?<br />
: バトー「装備は？」
: 草薙「M23とユニットB。」
: Batou: Equipment?
: Kusanagi: M23 and UnittoB
Also: What's a Unit-B?
19:18, 3 May 2010 (UTC)

It's an M22 because the official manual calls it an M22. What the voice actor pronounces is a different matter. I checked, there is no M23 in the Ghost in the shell universe Excalibur01

What is this official manual and comprehensive list of all guns in the GitS universe that you are talking about? 22:53, 3 May 2010 (UTC)

I can't read Japanese, but it's written in the official guide to the Ghost in the Shell universe a friend of mine has. In it listed most things like guns in English including numbers. I have read in other sources online that it is called M-23, but most places has M22 written down. A site that makes airsoft shells of anime guns and it is a Japanese site, calls it M22 or the 9Weapon. So, unless we find some way to ask the creator what the official designation, I'm sticking with M22 because it's the most hits on a search engine over M23. Excalibur01

HV Ammo
While the article featuring the Micro Uzi is correct in asserting that High Velocity ammunition wouldn't foul the gun's bore, HV stands for Hyper-Velocity in GITS canon, the next logical step in pushing performance of conventional ballistics. Even so, a gun would disassemble itself long before sliding its firer backwards along the ground due to the party-pooper known more commonly as 'physics'. A clear demonstration of the distinction between High and Hyper-velocity is the effect the rounds have on the armored van Togusa and Kusanagi arrive in, discharging an incredible amount of energy into the body of the vehicle before the explosive charges take effect. Unless, of course, the explosion was a dramatically-delayed, cinematic result of a fuel-tank puncture, which still speaks volumes of the rounds' impossible penetrating power. User: AnomylousAnonymous

wat? In order for rounds to have more velocity without changing barrel lenghts or without adding a silencer is to make the rounds hotter, in other words more powder. Adding too much can damage the gun, for example the bolt slamming back and forth too fast and damaging the frame, upper reciever, etc.--FIVETWOSEVEN 13:29, 5 September 2010 (UTC)

^ That sounds like a more compact version of my statement. Not sure what you mean about adding a silencer increasing a round's velocity, though. That's just... wrong. User: AnomylousAnonymous
::Which is why you don't load fancy schmancy ammo types in older style guns. You're just asking for the gun to blow up in your hands. User: Young Gun

The Hypervelocity Ammo should be addressed at some point. Unfortunately, it's never shown in the film, but the 9mm HV ammo are actually bottlenecked 9mm cartridges to be fitted with a 4-5mm pointed-tip penetrator round, but use a sabot ring around the projectile, so it can still be fired in a 9mm gun. It's kinda goofy-looking and I don't know if it could work in real life. --Blitzen (talk) 07:43, 20 July 2013 (EDT)

::The stock appears to have been taped to the receiver, presumably to stop it opening whilst it is being swung around. --commando552 05:02, 3 February 2012 (CST)
Another strange weapon. This submachine gun looks like customized Heckler & Koch MP5 but it may be just some sort of dummies
:Judging from the two photos here, that strange assault rifle looks to be a Howa Type 89 assault rifle. Since there's no export version, it's likely an airsoft. --Blitzen 01:11, 19 April 2012 (CDT)
