The S&W 645 has a history of flashy owners, Det. James 'Sonny' Crockett (Don Johnson) carried a S&W 645 in seasons 3 and 4 of Miami Vice. To my knowledge the S&W 645 has never been a standard issue pistol in the LAPD, although it has seen standard issue service with other law enforcement departments throughout the country. For Alonzo a pair of S&W 645s are fitting; the imposing presence of a Colt 1911, more powerful than the standard issue LAPD 9mm, and unique enough to get noticed.
We know very little about the men in Alonzo's unit, but we do know that Mark wears nice suits. For a man in a nice tailored suit a Glock 17 would be his last choice, it's simply too pedestrian - something along the lines of a custom, or factory custom Sig Sauer P229 in .40 S&W, would have been a better choice.
Glock 17
Mark, one of the men in Alonzo's unit, carries a Glock 17. In my opinion this was a poor choice by the films Armorer for Mark's character. We know very little about the men in Alonzo's unit, but what we do know is that Mark wears nice suits and Paul has an attitude problem. For a man in a nice tailored suit a Glock 17 would be his last choice, it's simply too pedestrian - something along the lines of a custom, or factory custom Sig Sauer P229 in .40 S&W, would have been a better choice.
Travis Bickle (Robert De Niro) purchases four guns from the illegal arms dealer he meets, the first of which is a S&W 29 in .44 Magnum. He is turned on to this gun by a passenger of his who claims he is going to kill his cheating wife with a S&W 29. The .44 features prominently in the film and is used later by Travis to shoot both the fat man and the pimp in the flop house.
The second pistol Travis picks out is a Smith & Wesson 60 "Chief's Special" stainless revolver in .38 special. The gun is incorrectly identified as being nickel plated. Travis later uses the little .38 to shoot Iris' pimp outside the flop house.
The third pistol Travis Bickle picks out is a S&W Escort, although it is incorrectly referred to as a Colt 25. He memorably attaches the S&W Escort to a drawer slide and mounts it on his forearm. Travis later uses his S&W Escort to kill the boss in the flop house.
